CultureHub Residency Program
The CultureHub Residency Program supports artists experimenting with emerging technologies in search of new artistic forms. We are seeking artists developing work that is both critically and imaginatively informed by technology. Residencies are open to artists living and working in Los Angeles, CA and New York, NY.
CultureHub Los Angeles will continue to expand our local residency program and offer residents time to target specific areas of their project’s development. Three residents will receive one-two weeks of time, space, technical support, and presentation opportunities in the LA studio. Projects can take advantage of CultureHub LA’s 5:1 Kalio Audio surround system, modular studio configuration, and flexible exhibition space. We encourage proposals for immersive audio environments, installations, experimental spatial design, tech-infused textiles/sculpture, and sensory/physical exploration.
In New York, the residency program is evolving. CultureHub New York is initiating joint international residencies with three partner locations. One New York artist will be selected for each international location and will receive time and space both in New York and abroad. Each joint residency will have a different thematic focus and will be supported by CultureHub New York and our international partner.
Artists can only apply for one of the residency opportunities. Artists must be based in New York or Los Angeles to be considered for the residency program. Artists should apply with a project to develop. Projects can utilize technologies such as telepresence, virtual reality, augmented reality, artificial intelligence, robotics, creative coding, live web, game design, etc. and can be at various stages of development.
International partners: DOCKdigital (Berlin, Germany), Société des arts technologiques (Montréal, Canada), and La MaMa Umbria (Spoleto, Italy)
CultureHub and our international partners envision a world where technology amplifies our humanity rather than diminishes it. We support artists who critically examine technology from a wide array of mediums and creative perspectives. We encourage applicants to learn about CultureHub’s current and past Resident Artists and view past projects prior to submitting an application.
The Open Call will close on: May 20, 2026 11:59PM PT
CultureHub Los Angeles Residency
These residencies are designed to support artists as they get new work on its feet and in front of an audience. We support artists who critically examine technology from a diverse array of mediums and creative perspectives. We welcome projects that explore both online and in-person possibilities, but they must engage the physical studio in some way.
Preference will be given to proposals that (1) have a clear vision for how to use our physical space and resources and (2) demonstrate solid artistic practices and the use of technology as a tool to explore and reveal the creative crux of the work.
Themes of particular interest: ecological responsibility, tech ethics, integration of old+new tech, localized networks, human connection, and sustainability.
Resident Artists will have access to the following support and opportunities:
- Access to the CultureHub Los Angeles studio, equipment, and technical support for 1-2 weeks in residence. CultureHub LA is a flexible space equipped with reconfigurable lighting, audio, video, and projection systems.
- One public offering to the CultureHub community during their residency (i.e. work in progress showing, artist talk, curatorial event, workshop, etc.).

Space + Algorithms
The joint residency of CultureHub and DOCKdigital seeks artists whose work aims to expose the spatial politics and infrastructures behind embodied AI systems. This residency is a creative research residency that proposes a shared field where bodies and computation negotiate new grammars of movement and space.
Leveraging the resources of DOCKdigital’s space, residents can propose projects that engage volumetric capture, depth sensing, floor mapping and wearable sensors, as well as real-time systems for the analysis, prediction, and transmission of movement.
Relevant points of inquiry include:
- How do bodies perceive space?
- How are these perceptions translated into algorithmic structures?
- How do algorithms read, predict, and model spatial relations?
- What exactly algorithms do when transforming the body into a readable interface?
The CultureHub Residency program will offer a one-week residency to a New York based artist at CultureHub in New York in fall 2026, and at DOCKdigital Berlin in early winter (January/February) 2027. At both locations, the artist will receive one week of studio access with full technical support at CultureHub New York, and in Berlin, additional dramaturgical and research support, to target specific areas of their project’s development and share it with the communities at CultureHub and DOCKdigital. The residency does not have to culminate in a completed work.
CultureHub x DOCKdigital (Berlin) will provide the following:
- Access to the DOCKdigital studio SAAL 4, equipment, and technical as well as dramaturgical and research support.
- Access to the CultureHub New York studio, equipment, and technical support for at least 1 week. CultureHub NYC is a flexible space equipped with reconfigurable lighting, audio, video, and projection systems.
- Opportunity to present one public offering to the CultureHub and DOCKdigital community during their residency (i.e. work in progress showing, artist talk, curatorial event, workshop, etc.).
- A $2000 stipend for the development of their project, which can be used how the artist sees fit.

CultureHub New York → Société des arts technologiques (SAT) - Montréal, Canada
Hybridization of Spaces & Telematic Installation
The joint residency of CultureHub and SAT seeks artists who are experimenting with telepresence and interactive installation. The resident will have full access to SAT Suite, an open-source toolbox for telepresence, spatial audio, pose detection, crowd tracking, show control, AI visual generation, and more. Competitive projects will propose experiences that connect the two remote spaces in real-time and create opportunities for audiences in both cities to interact through a custom built interface. While the residency does not have to culminate in a completed work, we are looking for projects or research practices that have a strong conceptual and technological framework and meaningfully consider the distributed, multi-locational nature of this residency.
Example Research Areas:
- Network systems for data transmission and translation
- Shared, participatory, or interactive experiences
- Next generation telepresence or co-presence concepts
The CultureHub x SAT Residency will support one New York based artist in residence at CultureHub New York and at SAT, Montreal in fall 2026. At both locations, the artist will receive one week of studio access, technical and research support, and the full SAT suite, to target specific areas of their project’s development. The artist will also have the opportunity to share their work with the communities at CultureHub and SAT.
CultureHub New York and SAT (Montreal) will provide the following:
- In Montreal, access to the SAT Lab, SAT Suite, equipment, as well as technical, research, and producing support for one week.

Data, Narrative, and Performance
The joint residency of CultureHub and La MaMa Umbria seeks artists whose work engages data in relationship to narrative and performance. This residency is a creative research residency that proposes the use of data, including economic, social, and political data, as inputs for creative processes and/or performative systems. Leveraging the resources of La MaMa Umbria and Cantiere Oberan’s space, artists can propose projects that engage creative coding, machine learning systems, public records, multimedia performance, and more.
Relevant points of inquiry include:
- How can data map to narrative?
- How can performance reveal stories hidden in data sets?
- How can data driven performative systems challenge widely held beliefs?
The CultureHub x La MaMa Umbria residency will begin at La MaMa Umbria September 16-30, 2026. The resident will be accommodated at La MaMa Umbria, a historic villa, and will live amongst culturally diverse artists who are all working on productions or participating in workshops. Immersed in the creative, natural, and regenerative environment of Umbria, the selected artist will have time and space both at La MaMa Umbria (non technical studio and outdoor spaces available) and Cantiere Oberdan (a theater space equipped with basic lighting, sound, and video systems). The artist will be supported by multimedia artist and technician Marcello Cualbu, who will support the artist’s process technically. The residency will conclude in New York where the artist will receive one week of studio access with full technical support at CultureHub New York. While the residency does not have to culminate in a completed work, the artist is welcome to present in-progress or creative research in NYC at the completion of their residency.
CultureHub x La MaMa Umbria (Spoleto) will provide the following:
- Access to Canteire Oberdan theater space, basic equipment, and technical support from artist, teacher, and technician Marcello Cualbu.
- Access to La MaMa Umbria shared studio spaces, which are used by all who are staying at the villa at the time.
- Accomodation at La MaMa Umbria, meals, and local transportation.
