INTO UNCERTAIN WEATHERS

INTO UNCERTAIN WEATHERS was an interactive installation and performance of poetry, weather balloons, mylar and haze which asked: What are technology’s affordances and limits in future-telling?

Despite state attempts to know and control the planet, we know that knowledge alone isn’t enough to secure our climate future. Inspired by Hito Steyerl’s How Not to Be Seen and Zhanyi Chen’s satellite poetry, the poem thinks about planetary imagery through a surveillance studies lens. During the event, the audience asked questions both online and in-person—only to receive cryptic answers modulated by a NYC weather API and accompanied by NASA satellite imagery. The resulting texts morphed alongside temperature, wind, rain, and other vectors of fortunetelling.

This project was supported within the CultureHub Residency program.
