Ghost Komungobot

Presented by CultureHub in association with Seoul Institute of the Arts and Bandung Institute of Technology

In Ghost Komungobot, Jin Hi Kim explores emerging interactive technology interfaced with traditional Korean instruments. This interdisciplinary performance is a collaboration with acclaimed visualist Benton C Bainbridge, and sound designer Alex Noyes. The artists used digital signal processing of Kim’s electric komungo, computer listening, and gesture recognition to create compositional and improvisational structures that interacted in real-time through MAX/MSP software. The work is a reflection of emerging aspects of American and Korean culture including robots, artificial intelligence, and explorations of multidimensional space in the universe.

Ghost Komungobot was originally presented as a work-in-progress at CultureHub’s Refest (2015) in The Downstairs at La MaMa. It went on to be produced in New York at Harvestworks. In 2018, CultureHub New York hosted a telematic performance of Ghost Komungobot that connected the performers with students and faculty at CultureHub Korea at the Seoul Institute of the Arts and CultureHub Indonesia at the Bandung Institute of Technology.
