lineage in loops is a craft × code workshop led by Helen Lin and Yu Lee that traces language, technology, and cultural memory through textile and computation. Participants map name characters into filet crochet patterns using web-based tools, then hand-stitch these patterns into textile pieces.
The workshop explores connections between textile structures and computational logic, drawing from the garment industry history of New York. By slowing down automated processes of weaving through manual crochet, participants are invited to archive their name memories into a tactile, personal artifact that is repeated, weighted, and held.
No prior experience in code or crochet is required. Participants will learn basic stitching and create a crochet square they can take home.
lineage in loops is presented as a part of Re–Fest, CultureHub’s annual festival that brings artists, activists, and technologists together to explore our role in re-shaping the future. The full artist line-up and programming schedule will be announced soon.
