Walking Mass

Presented by CultureHub

Walking Mass is a collective walk by NUUM Collective coordinated through a Zoom conference call and captured from above with a drone camera. Participants go for a walk... 6 feet apart, yet connected by the sound of their voices. Participants walk to find a common denominator, a connection that is pure. Not through mutual understanding, which is impossible but through a willingness to participate.

Walking Mass
was presented as a part of Re-Fest 2021 to commemorate the one year mark of the pandemic hitting the U.S. and memorialize a year of loss and separation.

NUUM is a collective of multidisciplinary artists committed to bringing multiple forms together into a total work of art. We work across a broad range of forms including movement, sound, text, visual art and codified rules of interaction. We examine each form through the lens of an adjacent one by asking some basic questions about sensing and cognition. What do we (not) see? What’s real? What’s manufactured? What is after-taste? How does movement define space? How does stillness define movement? How does language subvert our senses? How do participation and choice craft a narrative that holds the audience in a tighter embrace? Our work has been supported by CultureHub, The Movement Lab at Barnard College, MANA Contemporary, The Center for Ballet and The Arts, The National Endowment for the Arts among others.
