New Instrument Design and Applications with Organic Materials

In this livestream concert and conversation, instrument Designer and trumpet player Gavin Brehm shares the journey of design a new instrument. Sparked by the unique design of the Korean Daegeum flute, but searching for new sounds and expressions, Brehm set out to create a new musical tool. By combining the distinctive bamboo and wheat membrane of Daegeum with brass technique, new tuning, and integrated electronics Brehm creates a new family of instruments encompassing the depth and warmth of brass with the soft and reedy timbre of Dageum, designed with small, introspective performances for the socially-distanced digital audiences of today in mind.

This international livestream event will feature an overview on the design process of this, as of yet, unnamed new instrument - from napkin sketches to final bamboo instruments, along with the thinking and issues surrounding new instrument design in general. A quartet ensemble will perform a piece using the instruments composed by collaborator Professor Woody Pak of the Seoul Institute of the Arts. Following the performance will be an open Q&A with Gavin Brehm and Woody Pak.
