Joe Diebes is a composer and multi-disciplinary artist. His performance and audiovisual work plays with and against the legacies of experimental theater, chamber opera, and expanded cinema, while critically investigating how longstanding colonial dynamics are reproduced through current digital technologies. Diebes’ installations and performances have been exhibited in numerous media art spaces, galleries, museums, and public spaces including The Liverpool Biennial, The Hammer Museum, the Torino Winter Olympics, Grand Central Art Center, BRIC Media Arts, Harvestworks, David Winton Bell Gallery, Yuanfen Gallery (Beijing), The Watermill Center, and The Whitney Museum of American Art.

At the CultureHub LA studio I’ll be developing visual and interactive ideas for ENG: Over The Horizon, an opera / gallery performance that critically explores the American news media’s presentation of the Middle East. The plan is to experiment with a performance system that composites live news reporters into a 3D game engine environment in real-time, so that the audience can watch both the constructed final image and the process of its making.
