Live Augmented Performance: How AR can create magic on the stage and beyond

Zoom
Tuesday, March 15, 2022
3–4:30pm ET / 12–1:30pm PT
Sliding Scale $10–$30

This workshop led by Technodramatists’s founder Lorne Svarc will cover how AR can be harnessed for live performance to create magic on the stage and beyond. Theatre and AR are both temporal and spatial mediums, that is, they require their audiences/users to experience them in specific times and places for ideal impact. Their shared focus on synchronicity and immersion allows AR to accentuate the magical, ephemeral nature of live performance and vice versa. Virtual sets, props, costumes and effects can make anything possible on stage and can be created at a fraction of the cost and time of their traditional counterparts. Moreover, you no longer need expensive equipment and expert technical knowledge to take advantage of powerful tools like motion capture, 3d animation, holograms, and more.

This workshop will include live demos of various accessible toolsets, applications that performers and storytellers can use to augment their live, virtual, or hybrid productions, and best practices to ensure that the technology serves the story and not the other way around.

Purchase a ticket to reserve your spot in this virtual workshop, which will be held on Zoom. There are free tickets for those experiencing financial hardship. To request a free ticket, please email refest@culturehub.org.

Accessibility: This workshop will include live automatic transcription via Zoom. An access coordinator will be present for access and technical support. Please contact access@culturehub.org for any access questions or further needs.

Image Description: An ipad on a tripod displays an astronaut wearing a technicolor space suit dancing over a magenta bric background. It rests before and slightly occludes a scene just beyond which it seems to be recording or tracking: a person in blurry relief over the same background dancing in a similarly colorful baggy jumpsuit and wearing a personal earpiece and microphone taped to their cheek.
