Since 2020, Fake Friends have experimented generating new forms of hybrid in-person and streaming theater. The collective’s work combines historical cinematographies (multi-camera sitcom, the tracking shot, the close up) with contemporary social media cinematographies (the selfie, the front-facing video). In their new show, Breslin and Foley experiment with songwriting and digital music production. Featuring performances by the duo and Catherine Maria Rodriguez, direction by Rory Pelsue, and dramaturgy by Ariel Sibert.

RSVPs are currently full, but you can join the waiting list in case any space becomes available.

Fake Friends is a CultureHub Resident Artist.

Fake Friends is a New York-based theater and digital media production company that develops and produces original works for the stage, screen, and internet. We mix and remix iconic popular culture moments to push personal, political, and theatrical boundaries, often through a queer lens. Fake Friends strives to expand the definition of what theater is and who it is for, investigating the screens and prosceniums that dominate our daily lives.

Michael Breslin and Patrick Foley lead the company, in collaboration with core members Cat Rodríguez, Ariel Sibert, and Rory Pelsue. Their play Circle Jerk premiered online in 2020 and in-person in 2022, and it was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Drama. Other works include: This American Wife (“Best Theater of 2021” by the LA Times and the New Yorker) and A Doll’s House, Part 3.
