Distant-Streams: PST combines spatial sound mixes performed by two remote improvisers, transmitted to each other in real-time via web-app devised by the artist. Material used in the performance consists of guitar and environmental recordings made in Los Angeles and New York City, which are thus shaped by compression artifacts and the natural time-delay incurred through transmission.

Audiences in each real location experience a shared, multichannel sound (net)work formed by both improvisers, while online listeners, connected via web browser, experience a 3-dimensional binaural mix through personal sound systems. This work explores new opportunities for remote collaboration and the nascent potential of distant multichannel performance.

Audiences can experience Distant-Streams: PST created by CultureHub Resident Artist Tommy Martinez by joining us in-person at CultureHub NYC or by tuning into the interactive livestream. RSVP to receive the livestream link. If you’re interested in joining the LA performance in-person, please email info@culturehub.org to receive the location.

Concept, Networked/Spatial Audio Systems: Tommy Martinez
Performers: Tommy Martinez, Jazmin Romero

This project is supported within the CultureHub Residency program.

Tommy Martinez is an artist and programmer working through research, sound and code. He creates software and musical systems for the internet, custom electronic devices, and for live multichannel performance which he engages as a performer, and composer. Martinez has performed at MoMA PS1, The DiMenna Center for Classical Music, Fridman Gallery, and Pioneer Works and has lectured on sound and electronic art at School for Poetic Computation, UC Berkeley, Stanford University, NYU, and Columbia.

Jazmin Romero is an artist from Los Angeles, California. Her work explores how memory is embodied through performance, video, sound, and sculpture. Romero’s practice considers experimentation, improvisation, and collaboration as pathways for alternative forms of storytelling. She engages with the relationship between musical gesture and physical form to produce scores, assemblages, and compositions. She is also a member of various performance and music production collectives, such as COQUETA.
