What constructs your world? In this 5-day workshop, participants ages 14–20 will engage in community-reflection through an interdisciplinary approach with Hip Hop. Deconstruct your world to change your world using dance, video projection, experimental sound recording/creation, and sensor-based technology. This workshop is taught by Chicago based-artist cat mahari and Tiri Kananuruk and Sebastián Morales Prado of MORAKANA.

Participants will:

  • Use digital media to create, collage, and remix a variety of audio and visual materials.

  • Unpack some of the complexity of interactions, thoughts, and environments that are reflective of your community.

  • Experiment with Adafruit based sound triggers and video projection blending

  • Have opportunities to collaborate on different aspects of the lab process.

CoLab is CultureHub’s free one week art & technology program for young artists ages 14–20. This workshop is FREE and open to anyone interested in the arts and technology ages 14-20. No previous experience necessary. Participants who complete the full program will receive a gift card stipend!

Registration is now closed.

cat mahari’s practice is built from a richly layered body history, stemming from an archive of research, physical training and intent to manifest an intellectual, material and informal legacy of Blk liberation through documentation. By examining personal marks and socio-genealogical maps, she explores inner and outer environments. She finds that movement reveals an inherent awkwardness, strength, wildness, and humor sourced from the liminal language of experiences. Mahari is a culture bearer of Hip Hop and House; former member of the Krump family Gool, with a BFA in dance performance from UMKC and MA in performance, practice, and research from RCCSD.

MORAKANA is a New York-based studio founded by Tiri Kananuruk (Thailand) and Sebastián Morales Prado (Mexico). Their work is characterized by experimentation, development of custom tools, and scientific and artistic inquiry. By leveraging scientific principles and challenging the role of technology in our lives, MORAKANA invites us to think critically about plausible means for Nature to reclaim the physical and digital ecosystems we are part of.

They teach at the School for Poetic Computation (SFPC) and Collaborative Arts (NYU). Their work has been supported by CultureHub, Autodesk Pier 9, Mana Contemporary, Tropical Futures Institute and ITP, NYU among others.

Image Description: A dancing person is mid-motion with one hand on the ground and the other in the air. A projector adjacent to them is lit with text that reads: “Rely on the technology of the self.” On the ground there is a mapping of multicolor interconnected painters tape and chalk drawings. Three ropes hang from the ceiling.
