Mattie McMaster is a performer and producer from Somerville, MA. She earned her degree in Theater and International Relations with a certificate in Public Policy and Community Action from Connecticut College. She received awards for Theater & Activism and Feminist Collective Action for discontinuing an annual production of The Vagina Monologues and founding The WE Initiative for which she curated original written works by women and trans writers for an evening-length performance. She was first introduced to La MaMa in 2014 when she received a Mellon Undergraduate Research Scholarship to attend La MaMa Umbria’s Symposium on Theater for Social Change and Community Engagement in Spoleto, Italy where she worked with Belarus Free Theater.
Now based in New York City, Mattie has produced in various La MaMa venues, including the 55th Season Gala, an evening of experimental dinner theater hosted and conceived by Allee Willis (co-writer of The Color Purple musical). With CultureHub, she has produced Refest 2.0, an annual festival bridging communication between artists, activists, and technologists in the La MaMa Galleria and Hi-Fi | Wi-Fi | Sci-Fi, an immersive live production of 5 short plays playwright Robert Patrick in The Downstairs at La MaMa.
As a performer, Mattie has acted in The Faculty Room by William Electric Black at Theater for the New City, (non)Consensual Relationships with Ghosts by Susana Cook at La MaMa, WOW Café, and BAAD (Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance), and has contributed to shared evenings of performance at Triskelion Arts. She has also traveled to South Carolina to perform and produce an adaptation of The Birds by Aristophanes at The Back Swamp School House.
