We invite you to take part in our player activated piece.

Two distinct locations- NYC and Porto will be connected (room to room) over the course of four hours. During this connection guests are invited to take part in Unquantifiably Infinite  [Unknown] Unknowns, a game designed to reveal the hidden potential in strangers and everyday objects. The In Real Life (IRL) and remote participants will give each other predetermined “challenges” within protocols of play, such as leading songs and drawing on the wall and interpreting poetry through dance.  Through a directed exchange of skills, thoughts, ideas and personal stories a hidden and previously unknown wealth of shared human experience and knowledge will come to light. The game is designed to allow the guest responses across all three spaces to shape the experience and final outcome. UI[U]U is influenced by the Buddhist 4 Noble Truths, Jacques Rancier’s Emancipated Spectator,and the work of Roy Ascott.

This project is part of the New Museum's Ideas City Festival in collaboration with futureplaces in Porto, Portugal.

Come join Miwa Matreyek at CultureHub for an intimate performance of her piece, Myth and Infrastructure.

As the artist walks behind the screen, her shadow becomes an integral part of a fantastical world: She traverses oceanscapes, and cityscapes as she conjures dreamlike scenes with light and shadow.

Miwa Matreyek is an internationally recognized animator, designer, and multimedia artist based in Los Angeles. She creates animated short films as well as live works that integrate animation, performance, and video installation. Arriving to animation from a background in collage, her work explores how animation transforms when it is combined with body, both physically in her performance pieces, as well as a composited video element in her shortfilms.

In her projection based performances, animation takes on a more physical and present quality, while body and space take on a more fantastical quality, creating an experience that is both cinematic and theatrical. She is interested in the slippery meeting point of cinema and theater/performance, the moments of convergence where fantastical illusions are created, and the moments of divergence where the two struggles against each other.

Her work has been shown internationally at animation/film festivals, theatre festivals, performance festivals, as well as art galleries, science museums, tech conferences, universities, and more.

Matreyek received her MFA (2007) in Experimental Animation and Integrated Media at the California Institute of the Arts. She is one of the founding-member and core-collaborator of Cloud Eye Control

Created in 2010 with Special Projects Grant by Princess Grace Foundation, Seed Grant by Under the Radar Festival and the Association of Performing Arts Presenters.

Join CultureHub and the Seoul Institute of the Arts for a trans-continental concert. Shakuhachi player Ralph Samuelson, bansuri player Steve Gorn and percussionist / multi-instrumentalist Yukio Tsuji will play live in New York City with instrumentalists at the Seoul Institute of the Arts .

"'Universal Flute' is a small piece composed for solo shakuhachi in 1946 by the acclaimed, pioneering American composer Henry Cowell. This is the first American composition for the shakuhachi. As the title implies, it indeed captures something universal in the sound of the flute, and hence seems appropriate for adaptation by different flutes of the world."  

Other pieces to be performed live between the two locations include, Arirang and Silent Night.

The Bronx Berlin Connection is visiting CultureHub! We will be hosting a Cyber Cypher featuring youth from the Hip Hop Re:Education Project, GangwayBeatz Berlin (who will be in NYC!!!) and Ashé Cultural Arts Center. Say, Word!

Hip Hop Re:Education Project, founded in 2005 is a community-based arts organization that uses Hip Hop culture to inspire and transform communities, engage marginalized and disaffected youth and improve youth motivation and achievement throughout NYC and beyond. GangwayBeatz is the largest urban youth social-services organization in Germany. Ashé CAC located in Central City New Orleans is a community based arts organization that creates and supports programs, activities and creative works emphasizing the contributions of people of African descent.

Daniel Pinheiro and Tiago Bôto from Portugal in partnership with Brooklyn-Based performance and exhibition artist Whitney V. Hunter and CultureHub NYC, collaborate to bring a whole new layer to the identity Project process. In this exchange both sides will be performing for live audiences and connecting through telepresence to address issues related to individuals, namely their need for construction and deconstruction of identity while acknowledging labeling trends that allow people to say: I AM___________. This event will also be featured in the Circular, Festival de Artes Performativas (Vila do Conde, Portugal).

Join CultureHub’s live in studio/telematic ARTALK with Taeyoon Choi. Taeyoon is a new media and performance artist. He earned his B.F.A at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2004 and M.S at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology in 2007. His work has been exhibited at Dislocate Yokohama, Japan Upgrade! Skopje, Macedonia, Nam June Paik Art Center Seoul, South Korea, Spanien 13c  Aarhus, Denmark. He lectured at Parsons School of Design and lead workshops in many places including Ars Electronica Linz, Austria and Medialab Prado Madrid, Spain. Choi received Arts Council Korea ‘Young artist award’ in 2007 and residency and fellowship at Eyebeam New York in 2008 and 2011. Choi collaborates with engineers, actors and activist groups. Choi runs a residency program for cultural producers in Seoul Temporary Space, and a commercial gallery for conceptual art at New Normal Business, based in New York.
